Weight
Average weight of an adult male clumber in the survey was 25.6kg with the range being
19.5kg – 37kg.
Average weight of a female clumber in the survey was 22.5kg with the range being 13.5kg 36kg.
Adult was defined as any dog over 18 months old.
NB we ideally do not want to be breeding bitches or dogs to the smaller end of the weight
range seen in the survey as this does not fit the expected body type of the clumber being a
largest of the spaniels.
Body Condi on Scoring (BCS) was used to assess whether the dogs were over/under or
perfect weight. It is a tool to help owners understand what an ideal shape for their dog is
and indicates how much fat is being carried over the body.
[How to BCS: Looking from above; how easily can the curve of the waist behind the ribs be
seen? What abdominal tuck can you see? Then, with a light touch and flat hands feel all
over the body. With only gentle pressure, the ribs should be felt easily without too much fat
covering them.]
219 (79%) owners perceived their dog to be at the perfect weight BCS 3/5 while 40 (14%)
owners felt their dog was overweight BCS 4 or 5/5. Only one owner felt their dog was
significantly underweight BCS 1/5.
