The majority of dogs within the WCSS survey were cancer free at the me of par cipa on
with 95.7% of dogs repor ng no signs of cancer or growths.
Recent studies have put the normal prevalence of cancer in purebred dogs in the U.K. at
around 27%.
Only 4.3% (12 dogs) were reported to have or had died of cancer in the WCSS survey.
NB: This could be because owners who had a dog pass away from cancer chose not to fill
out the survey for that dog, so the prevalence may well be slightly higher than reported in
the WCSS study. We appreciate those who took the me and difficult choice to fill out the
survey for their deceased companions.
The most common cancer reported by owners was Lymphoma, with 3 dogs being reported
with this type of cancer. Other cancers seen varied from benign warts to splenic tumours
such as haemangiosarcoma and malignant cancers such as so ssue sarcomas as well as
throat cancer.
Overall, the level of cancerous lumps seen in the survey was well below the expected level
for a pedigree dog.
