The 5 most common problems being:
Entropion – 24.1% of affected dogs
Conjunc vi s – 18.4% of affected dogs
Dry eye – 12.6% of affected dogs
Cataracts – 12.6% of affected dogs
Ectropion – 9.2% of affected dogs
4/5 of the above problems would have been no ced a KC/BVA eye exam.
1.1% of owners responding to the survey stated their dogs had been diagnosed with clini‐
cal signs of PRA (progressive blindness).
In 2021 the BVA issued 79 eye test cer ficates for individual Clumber Spaniels, an increase
on 39 in 2020.
In 2022 85 eye test cer ficates were issues which was up on the previous year, while in
2023 only 63 were issued which is down in 2022.
NB: this only includes BVA data up to November 2023 – KC/BVA do not have data available
for Nov/Dec 2023 yet.

4 dogs had gonioscopy in 2022 and 3 dogs were examined in 2023 for Pec nate Ligament
Abnormality (PLA) during their BVA eye tests.
PLA abnormali es can increase the risk of glaucoma and is tested by gonioscopy. This is
graded 0,1,2 or 3 and is commonly run in other breeds of spaniel. Li le is known about the
risk of PLA issues in Clumber spaniels.
