PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy)
Currently these numbers are significantly less than what we are seeing in Clumber spaniels,
though we s ll do not know the clinical prevalence (number of dogs showing clinical signs
of disease).
More tes ng is needed to determine the true prevalence in the U.K. gene c prevalence
seems to be higher than that see in the dachshund but at this me not enough data has
been collected to determine a true gene c prevalence or an idea of how many dogs may
be clinically affected within the Clumber spaniel breed.
Recommenda ons
1
To work alongside the BVA, CSC and Cathryn Mellersh at the Kennel Club
gene cs centre to inves gate the prevalence of PRA (both gene c and
clinical) in the Clumber spaniel.
2
To encourage the engagement of yearly BVA eye tes ng in Clumber
spaniels especially those over the age of 8 to monitor for signs of PRA
development in dogs with gene cally affected DNA results to monitor for
clinical signs developing.
3
To encourage owners to submit a free DNA sample to the Kennel Club
gene cs centre for all dogs tes ng affected for PRA on DNA, and all dogs
showing a posi ve PRA result on BVA eye tes ng irrespec ve of DNA
status.
4
The Clumber Spaniel Club provides free tes ng for all members dogs
aged 8 and over, and reduced cost to non-members as well providing
results are shared with the club. An eye tes ng session is now held in
conjunc on with the CSC’s Championship Show each year.
