Forelegs - Elbows
Elbow grading should be considered alongside other criteria as part of a responsible
breeding programme. It is strongly recommended that breeders select breeding stock,
both dogs and bitches, with an overall elbow grade of 0.
The grades are:
0 = Radiographically normal
1 = Mild osteoarthri s
2 = Moderate osteoarthri s or a primary lesion with no osteoarthri s
3 = Severe osteoarthri s or primary lesion with osteoarthri s
Dogs with elbow grades of 1 show mild or early osteoarthri s which is also likely to be due
to elbow dysplasia. Elbow dysplasia status of the parents, siblings and progeny for Kennel
Club registered dogs should also be considered before breeding, if a sibling with low elbow
scores is available this should be chosen.
Dogs with elbow grades of 2 or 3 have marked osteoarthri s which is highly likely to be
due to elbow dysplasia and should not be bred from.
Once enough elbows have been scored in Clumbers an EBV should be able to be provided
for Clumbers, currently there are not enough scored to produce this sta s c yet.
In 2022/2023 90 Clumber spaniels were elbow scored which is increased on previous years
and incredibly posi ve but s ll lower than those having hip scoring. Ideally both should be
done at the same me to check for elbow dysplasia.

and 2024.
