Exercise Induced Collapse (EIC)
Of the 56 dogs tested during the Embark project 21% were confirmed as carriers for EIC.
Though data was skewed by several dogs from the same li er being tested who were
already known carriers for EIC as had been tested as puppies prior to sale, as
recommended when breeding from or dog or bitch with carrier status.
No new affected dogs were iden fied during tes ng.
Out of the 500+ Clumbers tested by Embark, 93.2% tested clear, 6.8% tested as carriers,
and no affected dogs were iden fied. From this data, we can see that vigilant tes ng and
responsible breeding have helped control the problem, preven ng the produc on of
affected dogs. Labolkin reported a small number, 3%, of dogs as affected, but these had
already been iden fied through early tes ng and were not new cases.
The Clumber Spaniel Club are advising to stop breeding from all EIC carriers by 2025 this
would remove 5 of the poten al sires tested from the gene pool plus a number of bitches.
Recommenda ons
1)
For the WCSS commi ee and/or Health Advisory Panel to discuss this futher with
the CSC following the Embark project to ask for an extension to the date of
removal of carriers from the breeding program to prevent bo lenecking of the
gene pool further given the high COI.
2)
ALL dogs should be tested for EIC prior to breeding, a hereditary clear should not
be accepted by breeders as this is a Kennel Club recommended test and
hereditary clear depends on dogs being correctly registered and bred and relies
on no muta on in the genes or recombina on. The Kennel Club going forward
will only accept 2 genera ons of hereditary clear so all dogs should be tested prior to breeding.
3)
To only breed carriers to clear dogs and all puppies produced should be tested.
Ideally if a clear li er mate with good health tests is available this dog should be
chosen but this needs to be part of a bigger decision on breeding and why the
carrier dog is chosen should be carefully considered – temperament, working
ability, excellent health tests, good confirma on should all be considered during
these decisions.
