Executive Summary
This report from the Working Clumber Spaniel Society (WCSS) details the breed's health
status in 2024, compiling data from health and breeding surveys, the Embark project,
and other veterinary sources. It provides a comprehensive overview of various health
concerns, including skin and ear condi ons, anal gland disease, heart issues, cancers,
and eye problems like Progressive Re nal Atrophy (PRA). The report also
addresses orthopaedic issues such as hip and elbow dysplasia, spinal problems like
IVDD, and forelimb condi ons. Furthermore, it examines gene c disorders like Pyruvate
Dehydrogenase Phosphatase 1 (PDP-1) deficiency and Exercise Induced Collapse
(EIC), alongside Low ALT syndrome, inbreeding coefficients (COI), behavioural traits, and
reproduc ve health. Finally, the report concludes with breeding survey findings, offering
detailed recommenda ons for responsible breeding prac ces to improve the overall
health and gene c diversity of Clumber Spaniels.
Each sec on contains my recommenda ons which have been submi ed to the WCSS
commi ee who will in due course review these and use them and the data contained in
this report to provide the best informa on to its membership to help the con nua on
of the breeds health that has been one of the cornerstones of the society since its
forma on over 40 years ago.
