Reasons Puppies Were Not Produced
It is really posi ve that 90% of ma ng could be achieved naturally.
Only 7 li ers did not conceive puppies, the main reasons being the ma ng did not take, the
puppies were confirmed but resorbed, or the bitch would not allow breeding. Only one
li er did not take due to infer lity confirmed in the male.
Where a stud dog did need help to breed, it was due to trouble moun ng due to shortness
of leg.
Where a ma ng was not achieved at all, 33% of the li ers not conceived were due to the
male having trouble moun ng the bitch – a reason for this was not given where no li er
was conceived.
Therefore, we need to look at the size of stud dogs carefully when making a choice of
which to use to make sure there is not a mismatch in size of the two dogs and to assess if
help is likely to be needed.
AI can be considered more to help with diversity of genes where a stud dog cannot be
brought to a bitch due to loca on or distance.
