Conditions Experienced by the Bitch
Of 47 bitches bred, 15 bitches had problems during whelping or in the first 8 weeks a er
birth.
The most common issue seen during whelping being emergency c-sec on with 10 li ers
(21.3%) requiring surgery.
One li er required an elec ve c-sec on.
Of the 10 li ers requiring emergency caesarean:

5 Li ers (10.6%) produced needed a caesarean because the contrac ons stopped
(uterine iner a),

4 li ers (8.5%) required a caesarean because a puppy/puppies got stuck.
·
1 bitch developed a uterine rupture requiring an emergency caesarean.
2 bitches required a trip to the vets in the first 8 weeks for minor issues.

It is very posi ve that only 21.3% of bitches in this survey required a caesarean, this is s ll
very high but well below that normally seen in the breed.
In 2010 the Kennel Club funded research into the need for caesarean sec ons and from
data collected from 22,005 whelping’s, Clumber spaniels were the 8th most common breed
to need a caesarean with 45.2% of dogs at that me requiring a c-sec on the majority due
to uterine iner a rather than a physical blockage. Only 10.6% of the li ers registered in
this survey required a caesarean due to uterine iner a.
