Problems with Puppies before 8 Weeks Old
Of 47 li ers produced 14 li ers had puppies that had concerns during the first 8 weeks.
19.1 % of li ers produced puppies with umbilical hernias.
10.7% of li ers with jaw issues such as over or undershot jaws
10.6% lost puppies to fading puppy syndrome.
8.5% had puppies with congenital eye issues such as entropion or ectropion.
The prevalence of umbilical hernias is currently not known in dogs, and the cause has not
yet been iden fied but is thought to be due to gene c factors as well as rough removal of
the umbilical cord at birth although further research is needed.
The prevalence of over and undershot jaws in dogs is around 25% depending on the breed
– (for example it is much higher in brachycephalic breeds and lower in greyhounds).
With around 10.7% of li ers affected in this survey this is below average currently.
Any dogs with jaw abnormali es should be withdrawn from breeding to prevent this being
passed to offspring as there is a strong gene c link from parent to offspring.
