Fading Puppy Syndrome
Fading puppy syndrome is very common and is a catch all name for a variety of different
causes of postnatal death between 0-21 days post whelping with up to 30% of postnatal
deaths in puppies being caused by fading puppy syndrome.
Fading puppy covers causes such as inappropriate warming, care, hygiene, bacterial and
viral infec ons, congenital abnormali es, and a host of other causes.
One of the most common causes is canine herpes-1 virus. While risk of death can be
reduced by vaccina ng the dam it cannot be reduced to 0 as other factors such as
environmental temperature also play a part in the effects of the virus on the puppy.
In only 2 breeding’s were the bitches vaccinated for herpes, despite this being a frequent
and known cause of poor concep on, resorp on of puppies during pregnancy and loss of
puppy’s post whelping.
With recent studies finding between 50-70% of most canine popula ons having been
exposed to Herpes-1 virus Vaccina on prior to breeding should be considered to help li er
numbers and survival rates.
